This is, primarily, for the new folk joining us since The Great Zombie Migration, but also for those of us who are planning to leave New Haven and travel beyond the DelMarVa...
During the great Zombie Migration, all of the bridges on and off the DelMarVa peninsula (which is really an island, once the peninsula bridges were gone) were blown to smithereens to stop the mass migration of zombies through the DelMarVa.
For folks coming in, this means making a plan to get across if one means to make it to New Haven or Edgewater, etc... or arranging a place to be 'found'.
The railway bridges are intact -- but they're tricky to navigate. Got to have good balance and be able to maintain it, with any gear you're carrying, for the duration of the walk (Between 1 and 3 miles, depending).
The shortest stretch of water from the mainland is about a mile, give or take, if you come down from the north, and cross water where the Henry Jackson Bridge, Summit Bridge, the Dupont Parkway bridge, the Veterans Memorial Bridge or the Rt. 9 Bridge used to cross (they're gone now).
The shortest crossing from west to east remains crossing via Annapolis at Sandy Point where the Chesapeake Bay Bridge used to cross (which is ~3 miles or right around 5 km), with a 2nd water crossing between Sandy Point Island and the DelMarVa, of right around 1 mile, or ~1.5km.
It IS possible to swim these -- but probably not with gear. It's also possible that you might find a boat or raft--however, untended motorboats will have gas tanks and engines too full of sludge to run at this point, as their fuel has deteriorated, so your best bet is either a sporting goods store and an inflatable raft or canoe, or a rowboat or paddle-boat from one of the tourist or 'fishing shack' places on the water).
Welcome to what may be one of the most secure places left on the Eastern Seaboard! (Hey, at least the PTB didn't nuke -us- like they did TX and CA, right??? )
