While a character sheet is required in order to become a room member, I am always willing to give a few days' leeway to any newcomer who wishes to get a feel for the room while working on a character biography.
The general rule of thumb is that travel role-play or low-key interactions with other characters are fine, but you should have your sheet submitted and approved before becoming involved in major story lines for which knowledge of your character's skill sets and weapons inventory are a must.
While I don't expect a novel-length biography, I do like to ensure your character's role-play legitimacy and appropriateness for the room theme. For example, this is not a Resident Evil sort of room, and there are no mutants or super-soldiers here. By the same token, if your character isn't a crack shot, it is not realistic to post a perfect zombie kill each and every time, and magical supplies of unspecified, never-ending ammo simply takes all the fun out of zombie survival horror.
We try to "keep it real" in Aftermath - and we also try to keep it welcoming!
On that note: At no point should a newcomer be quizzed as to whether or not he/she has a bio and is "approved" to role-play in Aftermath. That's not how we work, here. Not to mention, it is not anyone's job to quiz a potential new room member but mine. I will determine when/if a newcomer needs to either commit or move on, or if said newcomer's role-play has gone beyond what is acceptable for someone has has not yet submitted a bio. A polite offering of the board link to a newcomer is sufficient - and that is where the spirit of helpfulness will end!
