With a few judicious exceptions, such as a particular role-player having a RT situation that only permits him/her to role-play every once in a while, our no-shows are now listed as INACTIVE and have been moved to the "Inactive Characters" sub-board of the "Character Creation" folder. (I even check the last time the creator of the board account logged in to make sure they truly hadn't been around in several months.) Inactive characters have been relegated to NPC status. This is clearly marked on the character sheet, which has not and will not be deleted.
This decision has several benefits:
- The character is NOT considered dead. Existing members can use INACTIVE characters as an NPC work force.
- Because the character sheet of the INACTIVE role-player will not be deleted, the NPC can be role-played with a great deal of accuracy based on the supplies/skills listed.
- Should the INACTIVE role-player return, he/she can put a notice on the board and pick up where he/she left off. I will put the character sheet back in the active section with a big ol' welcome back, no questions asked!
-IF and ONLY IF the INACTIVE player contacts me and says "you can kill off my character, I won't be back" can the NPC character be offed in role-play.
- Prospective new members will have a wider choice of avatar models, because I have removed the names of INACTIVE players from the Models in Use sheet.
-Prospective and existing members can see who we have... and who we don't. Happily, we have nearly a dozen regulars and more than a dozen other semi-regulars who still comprise our member base.
Please note:
- Should an INACTIVE role-player return and find a new member wearing his/her "face"... well, we'll just deal with it. The last thing I want is someone not feeling welcomed to return over an avatar issue. Avatars are often considered an approximate representation of physical characteristics. Look at how much Katy Perry and Zoey Deschanel look alike, and they're two very different people. We will assume their ARE slight differences in appearance and not make a huge to-do about doing a double-take every time one of the two George Clooneys walks by.
-That said... no new character will take the same model another ACTIVE member uses. Model registries prevent confusion and help our members feel like "originals"! Four or five Brad Pitts and Angelina Jolies would get obnoxious.
